What would it be like to abandon your independence, to need people, to rely on strangers for food and transport, safety and kindness - and to film it all?

Born and raised in South Africa, Kyle and Tarynn embarked on an adventure - to hitch-hike across the United States of America. Before they leave, a concerned friend offers them a colt 45 pistol as protection from 'the crazies'. Heading out of New York City, with a thumb in the air, the two friends’ journey, one car at a time, into a world of trailer parks, drugs, and American fast food. They find themselves spending the night with Dave, his forty cats and electric guitars! And their lives begin to change. Friendship is tested. They find their perfect family in a log cabin in Tennessee and accept God in a pick up truck with a man named Bob. Staying with strangers in a foreign land turns out to be a journey closer to home.

From securing our cats into the safety sections of their enclosures, pulling down hazardous dead trees, getting all supplies stocked up and ready, nothing is left to chance.

Big Cat Rescue is a non-profit educational sanctuary home to 140 unwanted and abused exotic cats like, lions, tigers, leopards, lynx and bobcats.

We are always thinking of new ways to keep our cats entertained at the sanctuary, this year we decided to give them easter eggs to see how they'd react!

They had a mixed reaction but overall the cats enjoyed their eggs and we think it was an egg-cellent idea!

Enrichment is very important for captive animals, we make lots of different items for our cats to stimulate natural behaviors and give them something to do.

Nothing goes to waste at Big Cat Rescue especially when it can be used as enrichment for two of our tigers, Shere Khan and China Doll!
Treats like this encourage natural behaviors and provide mental stimulation for our cats. This video puts a face on the cat's food and I hope it causes people to stop and think about what they eat. The cats have no other choice, but we do and seeing the cow's faces in this video really brings home the fact that the burger on your plate had a face too.

There is only one reason that lions, tigers and other big cats are suffering in captivity: We haven't gotten to the root of the problem...yet. The problem is that there are still some uneducated people who fuel the trade in big cats and a very few truly evil people who capitalize on their ignorance.

Those of us who know better, or at least have a more humane inner moral compass, far outnumber the abusers and their supporters.

We recently did a free tour for a group of veterans from our local V.A. hospital. Since a number of our own members are former military it is always a meaningful experience. We decided to make a different form of enrichment to give to Cameron and Zabu our male lion and white tiger that live in the same enclosure!

The cardboard giraffe/gazelle was filled with small chunks of red meat to entice the big cats into action! Cameron was first on scene and didn't seem interested so Zabu had the enrichment all to herself.

The tour group, staff and volunteers enjoyed watching her antics and we're sure Zabu enjoyed the snack and toy!

In this episode we look at a lesser cat called the Caracal. Their name is taken from a Turkish word that means "black ear." The Caracal is known best for its large black ears that it uses for its great hunting ability.
The Caracal roams the grasslands and open plains from Africa through the Middle East. While its numbers are holding in Africa, we see populations becoming extinct in India due to farming and the unrestricted manufacturing of charcoal from the wild weeds, especially in the Banni grasslands. By supporting animal conservation in these areas we can help save the land for the Caracals and other wildlife. Captive Caracals in the US suffer from people trying to keep them as pets, as well as trying to crossbreed them with domestic cats for the pet trade. (Less)

Big Cat Rescue is located in Tampa Florida, during the summer months it gets extremely hot, so to help our cats beat the heat we make them popsicles!

For the smaller cats we make bloodcicles, chickcicles and sardini martinis, but for our larger residents we make super size popsicles for them to enjoy!

Watch one of our senior volunteers go through the process of making one of these giant popsicles and then hand it out to a grateful tiger!

Namibia is one of the last refuges of the remaining world Cheetah population. A quarter of all the remaining cats are found in Nambia. It is estimated their numbers globally have declined by over 90% in the last 100 years. A local thorn bush species is invading the savannah in the country, causing over US$90 million each year in lost revenue to Namibian farmers, whilst also destroying the native habitat of the fastest of the cats. Now the Cheetah Conservation Fund has pioneered a scheme to clear the thorn bush and turn it into cheap fuel briquettes. The project is creating jobs at the same time as helping to restore the hunting ground of the endangered cheetah. (Less)
