My problem with The Long Road to Gary is that it's a mockumentary. Now, there's nothing wrong with that type of movie in and of itself - surely Waiting for Guffman is one of the greatest comedies of the last 25 years - but with this one there's a rub. It's about the making of a movie, and I actually want to SEE that movie, not a fake documentary about it.
We catch a few glimpses of it, and what we see is stunning. A busty blonde runs through the woods and hides inside a classic horror-movie cabin. Later, a group of zombies descends a fog-enshrouded hill at daybreak. These scenes look absolutely fantastic. Only later does the mockumentary start making fun of the movie it's purportedly about, called Gary, with some deliberately cheesy fight scenes. Before that, I was hooked on Gary.
Unfortunately, these clips are few and far between. Mostly what we see are talking-head interviews with the cast and crew. These are sporadically funny, but they've obviously been adlibbed. Only a few good comedians can do that very well; everyone else ends up sounding like they're trying way too hard to be funny. That's what happens here.
I'm ready to like this movie - but as a horror flick, not a comedy. I think directors Jackson Adams, Jesse Barack and Aaron Fradkin should take a look at what they shot for Gary and seriously consider making that into a real film.
