Lansing is a city in northeast Kansas, the place where Perry Smith and Dick Hickock went to the gallows for murdering the Clutter family, a crime documented in Truman Capote's classic In Cold Blood. According to this "documentary," the ghost of a former student is haunting the hallways of Lansing High School. It's kind of like Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, except instead of turning to stone, here the students just die.
It's also, of course, a spin on the TV show hosted by Linda Blair. Through talking-head interviews with students and faculty, the film relates a number of spooky incidents involving the ghost of an unpopular girl who died years ago. (She tripped and fell down the stairs, btw.) Three students are chosen to investigate the school premises at night. They seem to have no paranormal experience. In fact, they were probably chosen because they had some free time to appear in this movie.
Scariest Places on Earth is easier to pick at than other films uploaded by FetusFilmsInc. There are too many in-jokes. For instance, the interviews keep referencing a teacher named Mrs. Bach, but unless you actually attend Lansing High, you have no way of knowing who this woman is.
Still, the filmmakers have gamely aped the style of the original TV show. The voiceover (much like the one they used for Attack of the Plastic Santa Gnome) is hilarious, and the actors are just barely able to keep from cracking up while the camera is rolling. It's all in good fun, but probably more fun to watch if you go to the same school the filmmakers do.
