I don't know how Michael Maxxis keeps coming up with so many crazy images, but this music video for Addicted by P.O.D. is positively stuffed with them. It aims to creep you the f**k out, and succeeds handily.
The band performs in what looks like an underground cellar. The video has an almost night-vision look, with light-smearing effects reminiscent of the shoot-out scenes in Wong Kar-Wai's Fallen Angels. From the cellar, Maxxis cuts to various, seemingly unconnected shots of nightmarish tableaux: a David Lynch figure with a glowing heart; a guy in a Freddy Krueger shirt chomping on eggs; Grizzly Adams rolling around in (and at one point seeming to hump) a pile of fish; a little girl getting her hair cut by a faceless man with a butcher knife. I don't see a pattern or a theme to all this, though the scenes of an elderly black lady lying down in front of a building seem to be a deliberate evocation of the Hurricane Katrina tragedy.
Maxxis isn't all doom-and-gloom. Later scenes of two beautiful Asian women getting their makeup done and kids playing on a beach suggest there's light at the end of the tunnel. It may be a nightmare or a hallucination or a bad trip, but above all this video is an experience.
