Victor Solomon is back in high-art mode, and just like in the exquisite Bulletin, his choices enhance the film rather than detract from it. This is a macabre little tale about a man whose girlfriend is kidnapped for ransom. When he doesn't pay up, they start leaving pieces of her on his doorstep.
Twisted? You bet, but also funny: the hero admits he's not in too much of a hurry to pay the ransom because he's enjoying some peace and quiet. If blue was the operative color in Bulletin, in Pieces it's the color red. The cleanliness and order of the production design contracts nicely with the messy, bloody stumps that arrive in little boxes; these are some nice practical effects. Despite the subject matter, the movie is never off-putting, and the last line is a real beauty.
