The hero of Mantis looks like one of the foot soldiers in Dreamworks Animation Studios’ Antz. He’s got an antenna jutting out of his forehead and a bulky suit of body armor. He also seems to be suffering from Woody Allen levels of anxiety, so he decides to create a s*x partner out of spare parts.
The movie is kind of like Weird Science, except whereas that 1980s John Hughes classic had two high school dorkswith bras on their heads, Mantis has a lonely mantis. It’s dark and funny, light on its feet where the other two films featured on Openfilm by Grzegorz Jonkajts, Ark and Legacy, are both heavy. The filmmaker completed it entirely on his own, using the Cinema 4D program by MAXON. See what he can do? What have you done lately? Stop browsing and get back to work!
Anyone who knows about the deadly mating rituals of this fatherless species should be able to guess what happens with the hero’s experiments. There’s a metaphor in there somewhere. I’m just too freaked out to find it.
