ManicAttack is devoted to top-tier Web series and comedic one-offs. Some shows are better than others - Keeping Up with the Greensteens feels repetitious and underdeveloped - but almost all of them are good for more than a few belly laughs.
Mommy Menthol is far and away the best show on the channel, not to mention one of the funniest series on Openfilm. It stars Tommy Walsh, who shares writing and directing credits with Christopher Burke, as a hirsute mother of two who's not only addicted to Menthols, her last name is Menthol. ("What is it, Swiss?" "No, corporate.") Much of the first season (season two is on the way) covers Mommy's romance with a middle-aged Jewish doctor named Abraham Schwartz. I like how Mommy's catchphrase somehow never gets old ("Mommy needs a Menthol!"), and how her teenage girls have their own agenda, trying to keep Dr. Schwartz from getting too close to Mommy. ("All she ever does is drink, smoke and listen to house music.") This show is a cracked vision of the American dream.
The actor who plays Dr. Schwartz, Bob Manus, also appears in Cross Eyed Cupid Rap. It's about a cupid who can't shoot straight because he's "f**kin' cross-eyed," which results in some pretty bizarre match-making. Other stand-alone videos include I Deserve It and The Adventures of Super Man - Thong. Here, you get the decidedly non-photogenic sight of a pasty white guy in a blue thong flying around stopping purse-snatchers. The robber's reaction is priceless: "F**kin' man-thong! I'm over it, bro. Put some f**kin' clothes on."
Two more shows: Speed Creeper and Fresh off the Field. Speed Creeper is about the adventures of professional speed walker Alan Benderhoven and his unsupportive, alcoholic wife. It's kind of like Peaceful Warrior meets War of the Roses. Fresh off the Field is a hilarious show in which sportscasters do play-by-plays of non-sports activities, like committing adultery and driving drunk.
