For such a young group of guys, the creators of FetusFilmsInc have proven themselves to be remarkably productive and innovative filmmakers. Clearly inspired by the work of cult director David Lynch (Lost Highway, Mulholland Dr.), their movies mix comedy with horror, exhibit a sophisticated use of the camera, and feature a wide variety of thematic preoccupations.

Their comedies, such as MySpace Intervention and Attack of the Plastic Santa Gnome, are pretty much what you would expect from movies made in high school with friends and teachers. It's their darker work that surprises you. Postmortem features an unforgettable shot of a boy lying face-down in a backyard swimming pool. The neighborhood kids are indifferent to their friend's death, recalling the disaffected youths in Tim Hunter's true-crime tale, River's Edge. Other films are full of striking, surreal imagery, such as Sufrimiento and Mr. Carnival Man. Both Working Title and Influenza deal with alienated characters. In Pop Spoon and Posse, that alienation has given way to insanity, as two teens create imaginary friends for themselves.

These movies engage the viewer on both a visual and symbolic level. The exteriors in Something Else and Working Title are as bright as the rainforest. The jumpy editing and feedback-loop sound design bring to mind J-horror films like The Ring. Many of the films are categorized as “experimental,” and that's exactly right. They're experimental in terms of storytelling devices and filmmaking methods.

Fetus Films has contributed more than two dozen videos to the site so far. Almost all are worth watching, and every single one of them shows progress. Expect great things from these guys in the near future.
