I sure love me some Danny Malone videos. There's a sweet simplicity to them that makes them highly re-watchable. Of course, I'm a huge fan of indie folk, so that may have something to do with it. But I think I can safely say that just about everyone will enjoy watching this and Baby Bleu.

In Song for the Year, Malone is looking back on a relationship and missing a girl. The girl, played by Ariel Hunt, is the main attraction of this video. She's an incredibly photogenic and naturalistic performer. The scenes of her showing off her big flashing-purple-lights sunglasses are like something out of a John Cassavetes movie. I like the way the scratches and imperfections give the video the look of older film stock. I also like the photographs. They really evoke the end of a relationship, and how sweet moments can sometimes seem sad in a different context.

Malone's songwriting is stellar as always. He's alternately critical of himself ("I'm different when I drink"), confessional ("I probably loved you much more than you think") and, by the end, gently pleading ("We could start over again"). This guy could be the next Conor Oberst, aka Bright Eyes. He's that good. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go listen to this song again.
