DeepRockDrive was a groundbreaking idea that brought interactive concerts to the Web. Bands performed on a stage in Las Vegas, and they communicated directly with their fans via instant messaging. Both the performances and the fan interactions were streamed live. They have since shut down, but I'm positive interactive concerts will return to the Web sometime soon. For now, what we have is the DeepRockDrive archive, and it's a wealth of dynamic sights and sounds.
The channel offers a diverse collection of musical styles and genres, from polite emo boys to in-your-face hip-hop artists and raging heavy-metal rockers. There are 135 videos on the site so far - about 12 for each band - so there's a little something for everyone.
Alive in Wild Paint play nine hummable tunes off of their sensitive new indie-rock album, Ceilings. If you're looking for something folksy, then check out William Fitzsimmons; fans of Wilco and Iron & Wine won't be disappointed. If you're in the mood to rock out, then (hed) pe is the one for you. Or if you're nostalgic for the long-haired T-shirt and jeans rockers of the early ‘90s, then listen to House of Fools.
The videos feature top-of-the-line concert footage that wouldn't be out of place in a theatrically released concert film like U2 3D or Shine a Light. The lighting is gorgeous and the camera is seemingly everywhere at once, capturing all aspects of the performance. The words projected onto the screen showing us what the fans are saying could have been distracting but instead add another striking visual element.
My only complaint has to do with the way Bully uploaded the videos. They aren't properly labeled, so we have no idea what song we're listening to. Besides that, this channel offers flawless presentation of some very listenable tunes.
