- Is it hard to upload my work?
Uploading to Openfilm is easy! But, in order to ensure that your work looks and sounds the very BEST on our site, here are a few important points to consider before you upload:
File Formats and SettingsWe encourage you to use the highest-quality version of your film and to make sure the file is in a "standard" format with appropriate settings. We use the term "standard" to refer to formats most commonly installed on Mac & PC systems. Our technology enables us to accept many different formats, but here are three we recommend, along with suggested settings:
Aspect Ratio and ResolutionAspect ratio refers to the relationship between the height and width of an image. There are two different aspect ratios on Openfilm:

16:9

4:3
All 16:9 films on Openfilm display at a resolution of 920x518. Works that are 4:3 display at 690x518. If your submission has lower resolution than this, it will be digitally magnified by us during the encoding process, and while we do a careful job of preserving quality, it's no substitute for true high resolution. For best results, the work you upload should be at least 920x518 (for 16:9) or 690x518 (for 4:3) or larger.
File Size and BitrateYou can upload up to 5GB or mail us a DVD. Bitrate is a major factor that controls file size. It defines how much data defines each second of video. The higher the bitrate is, the better the quality, but also the file size is larger. The best approach is to test what bitrate keeps your particular films looking clean while keeping the file size reasonable.
Do you have a feature film that needs a larger file size limit to upload? We'll work with you. Contact us at largeupload@openfilm.com.
File Type Compression Type Settings Quicktime Movie (.mov) H.264 Frames per second 30 (or native fps of your video) Quality Best (100) DV/DVCPRO (NTSC /PAL) Frames per second 30 (or native fps of your video) Quality Best (100) Scan Mode Progressive Aspect Ratio Whichever applies to your video Video for Windows (.avi) Microsoft DV n/a DivX Community Codec Rate Control Mode Multipass, first pass Bitrate 700kbps Windows Media (.wmv) Video Codec : WMV 9 Audio Codec: WMA 9 Videos Bitrate Mode Constant Frame Rate 30 (or native fps of your video) Pixel Aspect Ratio Square Pixels Maximum Bitrate 800kbps Image Quality 100 Audio Bitrate Settings Constant Audio Settings 128kbps, 48kHz, Stereo
- How does Openfilm select or reject content for publishing to the site?
Openfilm welcomes all submissions. Before publication to the site, each and every film is screened for technical and production quality and possible violations of our Terms of Use, Member Agreement and Copyright. We check that your submission has appropriate high picture and sound quality. We determine substantiality and completion of each work. A 10 second clip of an exploding statue of a squirrel set to a popular song and shot in poor focus will probably be rejected.
- How long does it take for my uploaded work to be published?
Premium members are guaranteed publishing within 24 hours. We strive to screen films as quickly as we can, but due to an overwhelming amount of submissions it can be as long as 72 hours before your work is published. If you don't see your work within 72 hours and have not received a response from us, please write us to content@openfilm.com.
We provide a custom conversion for films that have some visual or audio defects. Our team can perform sophisticated corrections to fix quality problems, and in some cases, tasteful censoring of mature content. We believe in freedom of self-expression, but we do look out for our Openfilm members. If we suspect you made a mistake in your description information, we will fix it. All of this is ONLY done with the consent of the author.
- What are some reasons that may cause a film to be rejected on Openfilm?
The following are some reasons for rejection:
- Low resolution - Openfilm displays videos at high quality. Because of that, we require submissions to have a minimum resolution of 640x360 (16:9)/640x480 (4:3). HD resolution (1280x720) is preferred. Please address the the resolution issue in your file and resubmit from your dashboard so that we can review for publishing on Openfilm.com.
- Copyrighted material - Your submission may contain material that is protected by copyright. In order for your submission to be accepted and showcased on Openfilm, we require that you have written consent from the publisher of the material validating your authority to use this content in your specific work. You can send us a copy of your agreement here: copyright@openfilm.com.
- Inapplicable content - While we welcome most forms of filmmaking, this particular submission does not appear to qualify for the site. Our content standards require that submissions be live-action fiction, animation, or documentary in format.
- Incomplete content - We're sorry that we could not immediately publish your content. It appears that your file did not upload completely, or it may be corrupt. Please check the file and once you've confirmed it's complete and without corruption, resubmit from your dashboard so that we can review for publishing on Openfilm.com.
Please, submit your films converted to a common video format using a popular codec, so we can guarantee the best quality of your film on the site.
Please, make sure that your file is uploaded to the server completely. Otherwise please try to upload it again.
If you feel that we have misunderstood the submitted work and you would like to appeal the rejection, please send a clarification note to support@openfilm.com for our consideration.

Openfilm payments are made on a quarterly schedule. If your account balance reaches $25, you will be given about 30 days after the end of the calendar quarter to submit your withdrawal request. The Withdraw button appears in the Dashboard, under Account and then Earnings section.
- Why are my “valid ad impressions” still at 0?
If you have turned on the Ads Option on your content and your valid ad impressions are at zero, it will be due to one of the following reasons:
- 1. Sometimes our ads are geo-targeted, which means they will only play in certain regions or will be restricted in certain regions.
- 2. Some advertisers set limits on the number of times the ads can be played on a site, so it may not always play on your video.
- 3. The ad must be played through to the end for the ad impression to count.

- Can I ask about my personal project in my question?
You may ask a specific question that pertains to your work, but we encourage questions that benefit the entire Openfilm community.
- How are the questions selected?
Every question is read to confirm appropriate content before publishing. The live webcam chats are for the Openfilm community, so it’s the community that selects the questions. All Openfilm registered members will be able to vote, up or down, one time on any or all questions. The top 10 questions selected will determine which users are invited into the live webcam chat.
- Is there a limit as to how many questions a Pro Account member may submit?
No. Openfilm has not implemented limitations for question submissions for Pro Account members but moderation is suggested. The Openfilm registered user community is responsible for voting questions up and down, and can react accordingly if one user has submitted more questions than is deemed reasonable.
- If your question is chosen, does this eradicate your chances for future question selection?
No. Question selection is determined by votes from the Openfilm registered user community. Openfilm has not built a limit on the number of times a user’s question can be voted into the top selection.
- When does the question submission process end?
The question submission end time is indicated on each webcam chat page.
- What if my question is not in the top 10?
Openfilm will select 10 additional Pro Account members by random lottery to participate in the live webcam chat. Those members will receive an email, and it will be up to them to join in. Replacement members will not be selected for any invited/selected members who cannot participate. If you are not participating inside of the live webcam chat room, you and your fellow Openfilm Pro Account members will still be able to watch the webcam chat live and chat amongst each other.
