The Worst Spanish Films of 2008

5th

El Patio de mi Carcel - My Prison Yard This film is somewhat indifferent. The storyline is not very deep, but the performances are quite good. Veronica Echegui's performance is the only thing that saved this movie, perhaps the best role of her career that gives her a more promising future.

The plot: A petty thief and her pals attempt to adapt to life outside jail. But there is not much more depth to the overall story. Perhaps first-time director Belén Macías will get it right in her upcoming films.

4th

Sangre de Mayo - May's Blood A director who deserves all due respect, Jose Luis Garci, made a film that is more than two and a half hours too long, making this an overall boring movie.

The plot is about the famous May 2nd uprising of the People of Madrid against Napoleon's troops.

The cinematography and the set design are the elements that stand out in this film, but the script and the storyline are boring and not cohesive. The set up and the confrontation are long and boring, and the resolution is the only part that grasps the viewer's attention.

3rd

La Buena Nueva - The Good News Another feature that takes place in the difficult times of war, tries to show a simple story, and gets caught up in a not well thought out script and becomes heavy with no reason.

The performance of Unax Ugalde, as a priest who comes into conflict with the national side and with the church hierarchy for their own particular interpretation of the Gospel, somewhat saves the rest of the cast from burning since they could not give much luster to a script that is too repetitive.

This film by director Helena Taberna gives more of a sense of a Sunday afternoon miniseries than a theatrical release feature film.

2nd

Gente de mala calidad - Poor Quality People This is a 90 minute comedy that seems an eternal story without end.

The plot is the story of Manuel who, after a lifetime working as a gigolo, comes back home to start anew. But his arrival coincides with a major forest fire, and soon he is coercing family and friends to volunteer for the rescuing squad. Through a spider web of lies, he will realize that, sooner or later, he'll have to come clean about his past.

The performances of the main actors Alberto San Juan and Maribel Verdú seemed really sad. Neither of them is credible in their roles.

Perhaps the name of this film should have been Poor Quality Movie!

1st

Mortadelo y Filemón: Misión Salvar la Tierra - Mortadelo and Filemon: Mission Save the Earth Their numbers were truly spectacular: 1,363,148 spectators and earning 7,706,465.77 euros, making it the most-watched Spanish film of 2008, only surpassed last year by The Oxford Crimes by approximately 60,000 Euros more.

The plot of the film follows two almost impossibly inept spies, Comic Classics Mortadelo and Filemon. When the rest of the world's crack special agents are wiped out in a U.N. bomb blast, the two klutzes are in charge of the mission of saving the world.

However, it was bombarded by critics, and rightly so, because it is very weak and full of bad slapstick humor, despite the characterization efforts and aesthetics. This is truly the worst Spanish film of 2008!
