"Rise of the Planet of the Apes" did not monkey around at the North American box office over the weekend. The prequel to the popular series starring James Franco, Freida Pinto, and Andy Serkis claimed the top spot bowing at No. 1 with $54 million, about $15 million to $20 million more than expected.

It was a nail-biting box-office drama over the weekend. The big question was, would the under-performing "Cowboys & Aliens" outshine the over-performing "The Smurfs" at the box-office?

New at the box-office this weekend, "Crazy, Stupid, Love" starring Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Marisa Tomei, Kevin Bacon, and Emma Stone, and "Cowboys & Aliens" featuring Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Paul Dano, and OLivia Wilde.

When you are presented with a movie named "Cowboys & Aliens" you know exactly what you are going to get. Instead of Indians being the bad guys, the extraterrestrials are the ones terrorizing the wild, wild West.

The B-movie marquee title of Cowboys and Alienssuggests a picture that’s more irreverent, imaginative, and fun than the turgid movie that stands behind it.
